We believe that athletes taking a year to play junior hockey have a tremendous opportunity to explore their academic interests, enhance their work skills, and build career experience that will benefit beyond their hockey playing days. This program pairs your athlete with a Fortis Leaders mentor who will meet with them on a regular basis throughout the year to help put together and stay on an academic and career plan.

Each athlete will receive a survey to fill out helping us understand their academic interests. We will then review options to pursue these interests at local community colleges and through online resources. There is an incredible amount of free and low-cost education available online where athletes can learn to code, program, design, explore data science, etc.
Your athlete will also fill out a career interest survey. This will be used to better understand what careers they may want to eventually pursue. We will then help your athlete set up apprenticeships or shadow days with local businesses and professionals.
Our mentor will meet with your athlete for 30-45 minutes in September/early October. During this meeting, they will review your athlete’s academic and career interests and create a plan for the year. Every month after this initial set up meeting, our mentor will schedule a call with your athlete to review progress and adjust the plan as necessary.
