To make a significant difference in the lives of our athletes, we need to have a consistent approach to character and leadership development. Simply engaging in the occasional effort will not suffice, particularly when the broader culture often promotes values like egotism, pride, and selfishness. Our Fortis Leaders Pin Reward System is a simple, yet effective way to saturate the youth sports experience, starting at the youngest ages. Coaches are given a set of pins that they can award to players who exemplify the values that each pin represents. From hard work to teamwork to humility and encouragement of others, these pins demonstrate for athletes what we as adults value. Players are already going to see that the social media attention is given to the talented players – the cultural value of skill is highly imprinted on their young impressionable minds. We need to show them that youth sports is more about developing humility, persevering through adversity, and learning to serve others despite the difficulty of doing so.
